Can you sue a country for smog? 88 people in South Korea are certainly giving it a go!
Air pollution in the South Korean capital has been getting worse. In January, the South Korean government issued a health warning to 8 cities, including Seoul. And Beijing is partially to blame.
The 88 plaintiffs are asking for $2,600 each in compensation for “mental distress.” And it’s not the first lawsuit they’ve tried, either. They attempted another one in April, but it was dropped.
Pollution in China is bad. According to some researchers, 1.6 million people die in China every year from air pollution. And according to NASA, air currents deliver the deadly smog around the world.
However, according to a NASA study last year, pollution created in South Korea itself is at least as much a culprit as China.
